If your team still lives in spreadsheets, this is the most important AI update of the month — and it landed right where your staff already work.

Microsoft has started rolling out Claude inside Excel's new Agent Mode. In plain terms: instead of hunting for the right formula, writing a macro, or building a pivot table by hand, you describe what you want in normal English and Excel does the work for you.

What "Agent Mode" actually does

Agent Mode turns Excel from a tool you operate into one you can delegate to. You open a workbook, switch into Agent Mode, and type a plain-English instruction. The assistant reads your data, writes the formulas, builds the summary, and even flags the numbers worth a second look.

Here's an example you can try on your own sales sheet:

"Summarise monthly sales by region, then flag any month that dropped more than 20% from the one before."

No VLOOKUP. No coding. It returns a clean summary and points out the odd months — in seconds rather than an afternoon.

Why this matters for Malaysian SMEs

Most small and mid-sized finance, sales, and operations teams in Malaysia already run on spreadsheets. That's exactly why this update is different from most "AI news":

  • Nothing new to install or learn from scratch. It's the same Excel your staff already use every day — just smarter.
  • Your existing people become the automators. The staff who already understand your numbers are now the ones who can speed them up. You don't need to hire a data analyst to get analyst-level output.
  • The boring monthly reports are the first to go. Sales summaries, stock movement, attendance, collections — the repetitive reports that quietly eat hours are the easiest wins.

Where to be careful

Agent Mode is powerful, but it is not a reason to switch your brain off. Two habits keep you safe:

  1. Check the output the first few times. Treat it like a sharp new junior staff member — capable, fast, but worth reviewing until you trust it on a given task.
  2. Mind your sensitive data. Before pushing confidential customer or financial data through any AI feature, confirm it fits your company's data policy. Start with internal, non-sensitive reports.

One small action this week

Pick one report you build by hand every month — sales, stock, attendance, whatever it is — and try describing it to Agent Mode instead of formatting it yourself. Even if it only gets you 80% of the way, that's an afternoon back. Do that with three recurring reports and you've freed up a meaningful slice of someone's month.

The goal was never to replace your team. It's to give them their time back — and point that time at the work only people can do.
